Welcome to Contemporary Pediatrics? Podcasting
What is Podcasting?

What is podcasting?

Simply stated, a podcast is an audio file of a discussion or news program which is automatically delivered right to your computer each time a new episode is available.

The term “podcast” is derived loosely from Apple’s portable music player, the iPod (“Pod”) and the idea of broadcasting. (“casting.”)

How does podcasting work?

Podcasts are distributed over the internet using syndication feeds for playback on your personal computer or downloadable to your portable media player. A podcast is comparable to radio, except that podcast audio is not broadcasted in real time, so that you get access to what you want when you want it. The episodes are automatically delivered to your preferred podcast receiver (iTunes, Google, RSS, etc) and you can choose when and where to listen, or you can store the information on your computer or other listening device.

Is it difficult to subscribe to a podcast?

Even if you don’t consider yourself technically savvy, you can easily subscribe to a podcast. All you need is an internet connection and a free RSS reader like iTunes. Using iTunes as an example, all you have to do is click the iTunes icon on the page of the podcast you’d like to subscribe to. You’re now set to receive episodes. Each time you start up iTunes, your computer automatically looks for new episodes and downloads them right into iTunes.

You don’t need an iPod or MP3 player to listen to podcasts (although they make for easier listening on-the-go.) You can even burn episodes onto a CD and listen to them in your car or home stereo.

How much does it cost to subscribe to a podcast?

Nothing. Ever. Just sign up and enjoy!
