When a student athlete wants to return to playing following a concussion, there are 6 phases that that athlete will need to follow to get pack to the field.
Patient needs to be on physical and cognitive rest with no symptoms for at least 24 hours.
GOAL: Gradual reintroduction of work/school activities.
The goal is to increase heart rate for 5 to 10 minutes through mild activity such as walking, light jogging, or an exercise bike.
GOAL: Increase heart rate.
In this phase, the goal is limited body and head movement through more moderate intensity activities such as brief running or skating. Heavy noncontact, sports-specific movement. No heading the ball. All noncontact movements. No weightlifting at this step.
GOAL: Increase heart rate.
Here the goal is to increase intensity but avoid contact. Activities could include more intense sprints, heavy conditioning, weight training, or noncontact, sport-specific drills.
GOAL: Exercise, coordination, and increased thinking.
Reintegrate into full-contact practice.
GOAL: Restore confidence and assess functional skills.
