West Nile Virus Cases Reported in 14 States
There were 43 cases of West Nile virus reported from 14 states this year up to July 22, according to a report published in the July 25 issue of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
FRIDAY, July 25 (HealthDay News) -- There were 43 cases of West Nile virus reported from 14 states this year up to July 22, according to a report published in the July 25 issue of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
The patients ranged in age from 12 to 80 years, with a median age of 46 years, the investigators report. Males accounted for 26 cases (54 percent of the total). There were no fatal cases. Eight blood donors were detected as presumptive West Nile viremic donors, one of whom developed West Nile fever.
Dead birds with West Nile virus were reported in eight states; infections were also reported in horses in eight states and Puerto Rico, and in one squirrel in California.
"West Nile virus seroconversions have been reported in 38 sentinel chicken flocks in three states (Arizona, California and Florida) and Puerto Rico. A total of 975 West Nile virus-positive mosquito pools have been reported from 19 states and New York City," the report states.
