I’m Dr. Bobby Lazarra. Welcome to the Medical News Minute.
Published in the journal Pediatrics a large cohort study using a military health system database looking at the concurrent diagnosis of hyperthyroidism and mental illness in a pediatric population. A distinct association was found between hypothyroidism and ADHD, adjustment disorder, anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder, depression, and suicidality. In all but suicidality the mental health disorder was the primary diagnosis first. So the authors conclude [that] this identified relationship needs to be kept in mind when addressing mental health disorders and hyperthyroidism in a pediatric population.
