FAQ: What does the new AAP iron deficiency guidance mean for your practice?

The AAP's updated clinical report revises screening timelines, ferritin thresholds, and treatment protocols for pediatric iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has issued a new clinical report on the prevention, screening, diagnosis, and treatment of iron deficiency (ID) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in infants, children, and adolescents, replacing the organization's 2010 clinical report on the topic. Published in the July 2026 issue of Pediatrics, the report was developed by the AAP Section on Hematology-Oncology and Committee on Nutrition, along with the American Society of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology. The guidance addresses the full clinical spectrum of iron-related care, from prevention strategies in infancy through diagnostic evaluation and treatment protocols for adolescents.
