More US mothers are breastfeeding, but not enough

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that although more women are choosing to exclusively breastfeed their newborns, the percentage falls short of the nation's goals [MMWR 56;30:76].

According to data from 2004, a little more than 30% of nursing mothers breastfed their infants exclusively through age 3 months (target 60%), and only about 11% breastfed exclusively through age 6 months. Rates of exclusive breastfeeding were the lowest among black infants (19.8%), and infants of young mothers (16.8%). The statistical trends on breastfeeding initiation and duration from 2000 to 2004 were taken from the National Immunization Survey (NIS). NIS is an annual telephone survey conducted by the CDC to collect data on childhood immunization and breastfeeding.
